The first rug producing workshop was established over a thousand years ago during the safavid dynasty.

Since the middle of the 19th century tabriz has lead a resurgence in persian carpet weaving both for domestic use and for export. These valuable oriental rugs are made from the best cork wool and are usually refined with silk. The blue mosque and the statue of the famous poet khaqani are well known in tabriz.
